Lakme Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2016 for the first time ever
witnessed a complete “Kanjivaram” showcase from Tulsi Silks
by Santosh Parekh. The collection was a compilation of 5 unique
stories, each spinning a tale that is timelessly classic, steeped in history, a
rich legacy of ancient secrets in an enigmatic contemporary avatar.
The 5 collections presented to fashionistas at LFW comprised of “The
Pastel Story”, “The Musical Story”, “The Animal Story”, “The Bright
Story” & “The Gold Story”.
Tulsi Silks’ primary objective has been to reach out to the
weaving community and provide them with support and security. Over the years,
in the face of both economic and social constraints, Tulsi Silks has
been instrumental in constantly improving the confidence of these master
craftsmen, urging them to transfer this legacy and inheritance to the
generations to come. In the continued pursuit to place South India’s
culture and heritage on the global map, Tulsi Silks has chosen, for
the first time ever, to present its choicest creations on a platform that
celebrates and showcases fashion. The brand considers this opportunity a
personal responsibility towards showcasing an extraordinary craft and legacy to
the rest of the world.
Santosh Parekh, Designer and Curator - TulsiSilks brings
together three decades of his tryst with the town of Kanchipuram and
the heritage tradition that is
the Kanjivaram silk saree. Res earch and documentation of
the queen of silks ie. The Kanjivaram has been his passion.
In his studio, every design, the border, the pallu, the intricate motifs
have been preserved as a pattern book for posterity. He says,“ It’s a
collaborative journey where the weaver and the designer inspire each other to
use traditional design and colour and motifs to create an heirloom
piece. It’s a meeting of minds where the nuances of
experimental colours, and contemporary motifs refreshes a tradition.
The time has come to give back to the weaver, to give him or her his due
importance in the history of the Kanjivaram. Recent initiatives by the Government
of India to promote handlooms on a pan Indian scale comes at an opportune moment. At LakmeFashion
Week Winter Festive 2016, Tulsi Silks is presenting the debut of
the Kanjivaram Lehengathat will revolutionize the ethos of
the Kanjivaram. It is intricately woven in panels with a shimmer
of zari and motifs that are exquisitely charming”
Gorgeous actor Dia Mirza - “I am
simply mesmerized by the collection! It is my first time wearing
a Kanjivaram on the ramp and I think it's commendable
that Tulsi Silks is carrying forward the legacy of
our Kanjivaram in such an amazing way. “My mom looks lovely in
a saree and and I would love to gift her a Tulsi Silk Kanjivaram for
sure”.
The first story is told in soft hues and a mellow palette - The Pastel
Story is a collection of pastel colored
traditional kanjivaram sarees delicately woven with gorgeous
silver zari motifs and borders. A tribute to musicians and
artistes, the Musical Story collection is inspired by five musical
instruments. The Veena, the Tabla, the Sitar, the Flute and
the Nadaswaram bring in a pictorial lyrical raga on to the saree with a distinctive colour palette
including black, silver and pink.
The Animal Story sometimes
referred to as The Forest design, Shikari or Vanasingara
m features a collection of saris with animal motifs. The
stately elephant and the prancing horse and other animal motifs bring a
charming parade. The colours of Blue, Red and Gold add a touch of
royalty to this one-of-a-kind ensemble. The Bright Story - Old
is gold they say and this collection pays tribute to the timeless, classic
designs of a certain vintage. A collector's item, these saris are inspired
by classical weaves and motifs and the traditional korvai (interlock)
weave that is the pride of a kanjivaram. The Bright Story showcases a set
of saris painstakingly acquired one by one and restored to its former glory.
The collection spans many generations and is a piece of history by
itself. The Gold Story Breathtaking show stealers that every bride
has dreamt of for her wedding day. This series is
a showcase of stunning masterfully woven heavy bridal
gold sarees in traditionally auspicious colours with
contrasting borders.
