Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendoza & Amole Gupte launched Sanjay Divecha’s new music album ‘Sanjay Divecha and Secret’ at BlueFrog
One of India’s premier names in Jazz and fusion music, Sanjay Divecha performed alongside Chandana Bala and Raman Mahadevan on vocals, Sanket Naik on percussion, Sonu Sangameshwaran on bass and Tubby on keyboards followed by his new album launch ‘Sanjay Divecha and Secret’, dedicated to jazz lovers all over the world. The launch of this new album was done through glitteratis like Amole Gupte, Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendoza at Blue Frog.
The very name of this maestro conjures the image of one of the finest guitarists this fraternity prides themselves of. A name to reckon both within boundaries and beyond barriers, Sanajy Divecha is highly respected for his perfect balance of technical virtuosity and ‘straight from the heart’ expressiveness.
His new album ‘Sanjay Divecha and Secret’, bursts with unbound joy and exuberance on the one hand and soothes ones senses with introspection and emotion on the other. The album is highlighted with covers of three traditional songs: Rhythmically coloured with African elements is their version of the Carnatic classic Mahaganapatim played as a tribute to Afro-Beat legend Fela Kuti. The album consists of a Hindi Meera Bhajan called Saanwarra played as a tribute to Sanjay’s country/folk influences. The third cover is a Thillana played in a funk based rhythm with Middle Eastern instruments like Bouzouki, Saaz and Doumbek.
Talking about this launch Sanjay said, “10 years ago, I discovered my musical identity with my album, Full Circle. Now, with the creation of my new album, ‘Sanjay Divecha and Secret’, I celebrate that identity with a more exploratory, acoustic and purer kind of expression which blends Indian Classical, Folk, Jazz, Blues, African, Latin and other World Music elements into an organic whole. To sum it up, this album is an amalgamation and distillation of all the influences and experiences that have enriched my musical journey.”
Sanjay claims that the biggest challenge with such a variety of elements is to make it sound cohesive. Fusion, as he says, must take place on a compositional level and not just as a colour. It is through this mindful integration, that each song captures a variety of moods that will be felt in the journey that a listener would go through.
With an extensive set of global and Indian influences the album also features the contributions of our country’s best musical talent. We can only guess at the kind of vibrancy it will add to our independent music scene both in terms of repertoire and performance.
